In recent years, tram is in the stage of steady development in China. In order to better realize the sustainable development of tram in China, it is necessary to actively learn from the mature construction and operation experience of foreign countries. Germany, which has the largest tram line network in the world, can provide rich case study and reference for China in this respect. First of all, the system characteristics of german trams are analyzed, on this basis, the standard of case selection is put forward, so that the selected cases can keep the same with domestic trams in the system. Then, the trams in Brunswick, Hanover and Munich are selected as the study cases to analyze the construction and operation characteristics of trams in small, medium-sized and large cities in Germany. There are some differences in the function, characteristics of line, passenger, operation of tram in different scale cities. Finally, combining with the case analysis, from the aspects of function positioning, line construction standard, operation and crossing road setting, transfer and connection, hub station construction standard and so on, this paper puts forward the enlightenment to the development of tram in China.
